Storage Tips

Storage is something that only seems to show up and make its presence known a few times a year for most people. Think about it for just a second: when we don’t need to put anything up for a period of time, we forget that we even have a storage space. But when certain points in the year hit, well, storage makes is once again relevant to most homeowners.

Right now happens to be one of those times of the year when storage is a thing that people remember, and that’s for two reasons. First, there’s the problem of putting summer and “cool” clothes in storage since they won’t have much use outside of the warmer seasons (and subsequently getting your winter gear out to keep warm when it cools off). Secondly, there’s the holidays. Why are those important to storage? Well, it’s because of decorations.

You see, I’m accustomed to using my storage more for decorations from one holiday to the next than I am for anything else. Sure, I put a few seasonal clothes up a few times a year, but it’s not a lot since I don’t own that many clothes. But when it comes to putting up props and decorations for certain seasons or holidays, well, I’m a master at that thanks to my mom. You wouldn’t believe the amount of holiday decorations we had growing up, and because of that, shipping boxes were strewn everywhere upon the floors when November rolled around.

That doesn’t go to say that everyone is like this or must be like this. But since it’s the end of October, it’s pretty common for people to start digging into random boxes in their basement looking for ornaments or fall decor or whatever. Or, they’re used to pulling out warm clothes to wear since they’ve been stashed away for the summer.

No matter how you choose to make use of your excess shipping boxes and plastic totes, it’s important to label your storage boxes simply because finding things becomes SO much easier than it ever would with just random blank boxes. Just don’t forget to slap some labeling tape on boxes and take a sharpie to each, labeling your boxes as accurately as possible.

Before you know it, spring will be here once again and you’ll be digging through storage once more for shorts and tees while also getting out your spring decor. It’s a fun cycle, isn’t it?
